The third game in the Halo series was released on September 25, 2007. GameSpot reported that 4.2 million units of Halo 3 were in retail outlets on September 24, 2007, a day before official release, a world record volume release. Halo 3 also holds the record for the highest grossing opening day in entertainment history, making US$170 million in its first twenty-four hours. Worldwide more than $300 million worth were sold in the first week, helping to more than double the sales of the Xbox 360 when compared with the weekly average before the Halo 3 launch.

Mass Effect Original Soundtrack

No question about it, Mass Effect is one of the hottest games of the year. Sure, some folks are still deep into Halo 3. Others are delving into Assassin's Creed. Elsewhere erstwhile rockers are chugging through either Guitar Hero III or Rock Band. But Mass Effect is the serious buzz game of the moment.

Likewise, the Mass Effect Original Soundtrack has been surrounded with equal anticipation. Perhaps it's due to the fact that the soundtrack was released in conjunction with the game (something that rarely occurs, either with videogame scores or film scores).

Or maybe it's the simple fact that highly regarded (along with Sam Hulick, and David Kates) composed the in-game score. The Mass Effect Original Soundtrack is comprised of 37 tracks, many of which are short (as in under 2-minutes) cues, although a few tracks break the 2, 3, and in one case 8-minute marker. For the most part the score comes off like electronic flashbacks (think of Vangelis' score for Blade Runner and you're pretty much in sync with the overall vibe instilled here). That said much of the music is infused with a grander sense of orchestral vision, often combining sweeping symphonically inclined passages with dense electronic simplicity. For example 'Mass Effect Theme,' the lead track, begins with ambient tones and strange breathy effects.

It then slowly slips into metered electronic beats augmented by slowly building strings. Then more emphatic synth kicks in, all of it rising to crescendo. 'The Normandy' more or less follows suit, starting small and quiet and then building with measured intensity. In many ways the synth/piano utilized in this track conjures up images of a retrofitted Halloween theme (i.e. Nods to the ominous minimalism of John Carpenter).'

Eden Prime' goes for a somewhat 'organic' feel as electrified crickets lay down a pattering rhythm over which deep sonic drones waver like musical mist. Then it's into Dr. Who overdrive on 'Battle At Eden Prime,' which also incorporates electro didgeridoo noize and clamoring synthesized pounding.

Meanwhile 'Saren' is delivered with menace and dread, relying on classic synth throng to create a lumbering and eerie shift. By the time you've reached the more symphonic intersection of track #6, 'The Citadel,' it's pretty damn hard to tell where Wall and Hulick's music ends and Jacques, and Kates' fills in. There are noticeable differences in pieces such as the stripped down electro surge of a number like 'Criminal Elements' (again bringing to mind Moroder crossed with Hammer and other icons of '80s synthology) and the more lush orchestrated embellishment of something like 'The Presidium,' but that's about all the distinction in styles you're going to find.Simplistic electro-rhythms collide with driving strings on 'Spectre Induction,' creating a bold, ceremonial sound that is brash and commanding. Meanwhile strange insecticidal synth swerves inhabit 'Liara's World,' which ultimately descends into a dark, mystical sound space that sounds like it could have been lifted from the Anthony Banks (he of Genesis fame) keyboard handbook.

Darkness and intrigue abounds on 'A Very Dangerous Place,' a track that lives up to its name in terms of ominous dread. Electro symphonic bombast runs through 'Protecting The Colony,' a track that is filled with all the grandeur and responsibility that the title would suggest.
